Self propelled armoured field howitzer developed by Oto-Melara since 1977 in parallel with the O.F. 40 MBT project (derived from Leopard 1).
First prototype was completed in 1981 and series production (for export only) started in 1982.
The “Palmaria” essentially consists of a large, flat sided turret mounted on the OF40 hull centre.
It is powered by an MTU MB-837 EA500 engine with 560 kw (750 HP).
Main armament is an Oto-Melara 155mm howitzer (41 calibres) provided with an advanced loading system; firing range of 30 km.
In service with Libya (210) and Nigeria (25); 20 turrets was delivered to Argentina also.
